Liverpool 5 Tottenham 1

The moment every Reds’ fan had been craving was finally upon us. Liverpool welcomed Tottenham to Anfield knowing that a point would confirm them as Premier League champions. After last winning the title during the pandemic, they had not been able to celebrate with the fans and you felt this time it was going to be something special for both the players and supporters.

Not that the intentions were every going to be to try and get a draw in this match. Liverpool wanted to make a statement and win the Premier League in the best way possible. The visitors had a Europa League semi-final on their minds and that is now the sole focus of their disappointing season. The last thing they would want is to be doing Arsenal any favours either.

Arne Slot’s side started the game in dominant fashion and forced an early corner. As the cross came in, Vicario got a weak punch to it. As the visitors failed to clear their lines, Szoboszlai’s shot fell to Gakpo with his back to goal. He controlled it and flicked the ball up before trying an audacious overhead kick that did not miss the target by much at all.

Spurs then ventured forward and won a corner themselves. As it came into the box, Solanke rose to head home to dampen the mood at Anfield. This was definitely not in the script many had read for the day. Not that it seemed to bother Liverpool, who continued to get forward and attack Ange Postecoglou’s side immediately from the restart.

Szoboszlai had the ball wide in the box and unselfishly squared it to Diaz at the back post to tap home. As soon as the ball hit the back of the net, the assistant’s flag went up for offside. VAR reviewed and the semi-automated offside technology confirmed there was nothing wrong with the goal and The Reds had found their equaliser.

From that moment, the hosts never looked back. Udogie was really struggling to cope with Salah and as the visitors looked to clear, Gravenberch won the ball back in the final third. He played it to Mac Allister, who unleashed a venomous left-footed drive into the roof of the net as Anfield erupted. They had turned this game on its head in a matter of eight minutes.

As The Reds forced another corner, Tottenham struggled to clear once again. It broke to Gakpo in the box, who did brilliantly to make some space for himself before slotting it into the far corner. It was a great finish from the Dutch player and Anfield was officially in party-mode. This was going to be the day they had all dreamt about after all.

Spurs almost made things a little more difficult as a cross was squared into the box and it seemed Tel was going to score an easy goal. A superb sliding challenge from Konate denied him as he cleared the ball away. The teams headed in at the interval with Liverpool looking in complete control of this game. Tottenham would have to do something special to change that.

After the break it was business as usual for the hosts. Some brilliant passing saw Gakpo through on goal once again but rather than scoring he looked to lay it on a plate for Salah at the back post. The Egyptian winger could not get past his marker and get the telling touch however. If this was a sign of things to come, it appeared it could be a long day for the visitors.

Tottenham came forward and Kulusevski looked to fire off a shot from the edge of the box but his effort was well-blocked. Liverpool immediately turned defence into attack, which saw a four on four situation in the final third. It was played to Salah, who cut inside onto his left foot and drilled a shot into the bottom corner to cause the stadium to erupt once again.

It was like boys against men at this stage and The Reds looked like scoring every time they came forward. Jota tried to get a shot off but it was blocked and broke to Alexander-Arnold. He unselfishly looked to play a pass into Salah but Udogie turned the ball into his own net. This really was turning into the Liverpool title-winning tour at Anfield.

They had chances to add more but potentially could be blamed for trying to score the perfect goal, not that it mattered one bit. They had run Tottenham ragged and they were glad to hear the final whistle. Despite taking the lead, this result never looked in any doubt. The jubilations at Anfield, inside and outside the ground, were spine-tingling as the players celebrated with the fans.

Nobody could doubt that Arne Slot’s side have been by far the best team in the Premier League this season and deserved to win the Premier League title. This was underpinned by them being fifteen points clear with four games to go. This was something special for the club and the celebrations are likely to go on for some time.

A touch of class from Pep Guardiola before his post-match media duties that same day after beating Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup. The Spaniard said ‘On behalf of myself and all of the club, we want to congratulate Liverpool Football Club for the Premier League victory. Well deserved, no doubt about that, a fantastic team’.

The worrying thing for the rest of the league is the mindset of The Reds. They see this as the start of something special and want to dominate the Premier League as Man City have done. The owners are likely to back their manager heavily in the summer and will look to add a lot of quality. From a neutral perspective, this could make things very interesting in the top-flight moving forward.
