Wolves 4 Tottenham 2

Wolves still weren’t mathematically safe so knew wins were of a necessity. Despite their crucial win against Ipswich last time out, more was required. They welcomed back Cunha from his ban but played an unchanged side as he started on the bench. They welcomed out of sorts Tottenham to Molineux, hoping to take full advantage of that.

The hosts started in positive mood and Bellegarde won a free-kick as he was bundled over out wide. Vicario looked to punch the resulting cross clear but it dropped to Ait-Nouri on the edge of the box. He drilled a volley into the ground which nestled into the far corner of the goal with the Spurs’ keeper well beaten. Molineux erupted as he wheeled away in celebration.

As Spence played a pass back to his keeper, he miskicked it straight to a Wolves player in the box. It was squared to Strand Larsen, who struggled under pressure from the defender. With the keeper committed to a dive, he tried to scoop the ball into the net from the floor. It missed the near post by inches and half of the ground thought it was in.

Spurs started to venture forward more. Try as they might, they could not find that killer-pass through the Wolves defence. It finally broke to Bissouma, who skipped past his man to find himself some space. He rifled off a shot from outside the box that needed a full-stretch save from Jose Sa to keep it out. More importantly he also palmed it well away from goal.

Pereira’s side came forward on the attack again. A hopeful cross into the box bounced up towards the back post as Vicario dived to try and claw it away from goal. Sadly for the visitors, he hit it against Spence and into his own net. Postecoglou must feel like he has constantly been visiting the dentist such is the numbness in his body to these calamities now.

Into the second-half and Spurs finally had a slice of good luck themselves. Bergvall did well to spread the ball out to Johnson. His cross was completely missed by Semedo as he flicked a leg at it to clear. Tel was behind him and, to make matters worse, his shot struck the defender’s back and nestled into the bottom corner of the goal.

Just as it seemed that the visitors had got themselves back into the game, Ait-Nouri did well out wide and cut inside into the penalty area. He squared it to Stand Larsen, who had the simple task of tapping it into an empty net to restore their two-goal lead. Tottenham looked so open at the back, Wolves seemed like scoring every time they came forward.

The visitors were struggling to dominate the hosts. With five minutes remaining, a corner was swung in and Romero headed it goalwards. Sa did brilliantly to claw it onto the crossbar but as it dropped, Richarlison was there to stab it home. Suddenly the game hung in the balance again as Postecoglou’s side felt they could get something from the match.

Bergvall had impressed since coming on at half-time. However, as he tried to make room for a pass, he was robbed of the ball by Cunha. He made a beeline for the goal with defenders unable to make a challenge on him. He slotted it past Vicario to put the game to bed for Wolves. They had grabbed another important three points in the hunt for survival.

It has been a dreadful season for Spurs, one they will be glad to see the end of. However, they still have the chance of silverware in the form of the Europa League. It may now be a situation where they need to prioritise this over their league campaign. Not something any fan wants to see but Postecoglou cannot afford any injuries to key players.

Victory moved Wolves 14 points clear of the bottom three. It may well be something they can now mathematically secure in their next game if Ipswich lose. Cunha made a goalscoring return to the side and it was a crucial goal to secure victory. This side just has too much quality to go down, after all they have three Brazil internationals in their side.
